Pakistan re-elected to membership of Executive Council of Organizatoin for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)

Pakistan was re-elected this morning to the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2-year term starting May 2010. The election took place at the 14th Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), currently underway in The Hague.

Pakistan’s re-election to the Executive Council by acclamation is a recognition of the positive role that Pakistan is playing in achieving the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention which is the only legal international instrument in the area of weapons of mass destruction that comprehensively and without discrimination prohibits an entire category of such weapons under conditions of international verification.

Pakistan is also the coordinator of the Asian Group in the OPCW since 2004.
